Experimental safety studies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation
Abstract:Aim To observe the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation(rTMS) in animal experiment and explore the safety of rTMS.Methods 36 Wistar rats were selected weighed 250- 300 g with female and male half to half.Rats were divided randomly into normal control(NC),low frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS1) and high frequency magnetic stimulation(TMS2) groups.Behaviour, histopatholomorphology, serum myelin sheath base protein(MPB) and neurospecific enolase(NSE) in rats receiving different stimulation frequency and amount were observed after repetitive transcranial low and high frequency magnetic stimulations. Results Serum MBP content in TMS1 and TMS2 were (8.22± 2.92),(7.31± 2.02) μ g/L, and there wasn't obvious difference compared with normal control group(P >0.05).Serum NSE content in TMS1 and TMS2 were (0.68± 0.09),(0.69± 0.13)μ g/L,and there wasn't obvious difference compared with normal control group(P >0.05). In TMS1 and TMS2 groups,no abnormal movement, stiff or clonus of limbs were found.Brain tissue morphology observation included gross observation, common light microscope and electron microscope, had no obvious changes. Conclusion Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation within fixed intensity and frequency is safe.
