Relationship of physical activity to BMD, cortical structure of radial and relevant parameters of bone metabolism in postmenopausal women
Abstract:Aim Physical activity level of postmenopausal women in Guangdong Province, China was investigated in order to explore the relationship of physical activity level to BMD, cortical structure of radial and relevant parameters of bone metabolism in postmenopausal women. Methods 137 postmenopausal women without endocrinological diseases, hepatic and renal failure, were recruited by simple random sampling from 12 factories and enterprise units in Jiangmen city, Guangdong province. The level of PA were evaluated by modified MOSPA questionnaire, and BMD, relevant cortical parameters of radial and bone metabolism indices were also measured. The relationship between them were analyzed by SPSS10.0.Results After adjusting such confounders as age, dietary calcium and VitamineD, serum estrogen concentration, higher BMD, BCI(F=9.382,P=0.003;F=5.487,P=0.021) and lower BID of the radials(F=7.713,P=0.008) were observed in the high level group than in the low level group of PA. But there were no significant difference in serum Ca, P, ALP, TRAP, and fasting urine Ca/Cr(F=0.161,P=0.709;F=0.168,P=0.682;F=0.196,P=0.659;F=1.835,P=0.172;F=0.162,P=0.708). However, the TRAP reflecting the bone reabsorption situation had a tendency to decline in the high level group of PA when comparing with the low level group. Conclusion Physical activity is positively correlated with BMD and cortical thickness of radial in postmenopausal women.
