Study on prevalence rate of fractures in the middle-aged and elderly population in parts of China
Abstract:Aim To study the distribution of prevalence rate of fractures(hip, distant arms and spine and etc.) in the middle-aged and elderly in some parts of China.Method Questionnaires were surveyed from 48 615 people aged above 50 in five administrative areas in China and lateral spine films were taken from cases in 1/10 of total samples by the stratified-multi-steps-cluster random sampling method. Results The total prevalence rate of fractures in some parts of China was 26.6% .Of them, the prevalence rate of males was 24.6% and that of females was 28.5% (P< 0.01);The prevalence rate was 1.9% in hip fractures,4.0% in distant arm fractures and 13.3% in vertebral fractures;there were also some significant differences of fractures prevalence among provinces, age groups and areas between urban and rural(P< 0.01,P< 0.05).Conclusion The prevalence rates of fractures were increased with age and that of fractures in females and urban areas were higher than that of fractures in males and rural areas. We should do the further study for the prevention and treatment of fractures in the middle-aged and elderly population.
