Abstract:Objective To explore the distribution characteristics of pathogens causing upper respiratory tract infections in children in Xiamen in different age groups, genders, and seasons, and to provide references for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on the nucleic acid test results of six upper respiratory tract pathogens in 7911 children who visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University from September 2023 to August 2024.The infection rates of these six pathogens in children of different age groups, genders, and seasons were analyzed. Results Among the 7911 children tested,1568 children showed positive for one or more of the six pathogens, with a positive rate of 19.82%.The proportions of children infected with adenovirus(ADV),human rhinovirus(HRV),and Mycoplasma pneumoniae(MP),influenza virus A(FluA),influenza virus B(FluB),respiratory syncytial virus(RSV),were 12.44%,24.74%,and 43.36%,14.22%,13.13%,3.65%,respectively.There were statistically significant differences in the positive detection rates of the six pathogens among different age groups(P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in the positive detection rates of the six pathogens between different genders(P>0.05).There were statistically significant differences in the positive rates of ADV,MP,FluA,FluB,and RSV among different seasons(P<0.05).Among them, the positive detection rates of the six pathogens in different seasons were as follows:ADV peaked in spring and summer,MP had a higher detection rate in autumn and winter, the epidemic periods of FluA and FluB were in winter, and the peak of RSV was in spring. Conclusion The positive detection rates of the six pathogens in children with upper respiratory tract infections are relatively high, and their infection rates are related to the children's age, gender, and season.Families, schools, communities, and medical institutions should take appropriate prevention and control measures based on the transmission patterns of these pathogens to ensure accurate diagnosis and precise treatment, reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics, and alleviate the burden on families.
