Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlation between lumbar paraspinular muscle fat infiltration(PMFI)and the degree of functional impairment caused by low back pain(LBP),and to provide quantitative data for clinical diagnosis and treatment as well as quantitative indicators for the evaluation of therapeutic effects. Methods A total of 57 patients aged 30 to 40 years who visited Huizhou Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine(Huizhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine)due to LBP from December 2023 to August 2024 and underwent lumbar computed tomography(CT)were selected as the research subjects. The axial horizontal paraspinal muscle area(PMA)and fat infiltration area(FIA)at the lower edge of each lumbar vertebra were extracted. And calculate the proportion of fat infiltration(FIP),and analyze FIP correlation with the degree of functional impairment caused by LBP.Results The degree of functional impairment caused by LBP in patients is positively correlated with the proportion of FIP fat area in bilateral paraspinal muscles at the L1 vertebral body level, and the proportion of FIP fat area in the left lumbar muscle at the L3 and L4 vertebral body levels(r=0.553,P=0.000;r=0.554,P=0.000;r=0.585,P=0.000;r=0.341,P=0.009.Conclusion CT planar calculation technology can be applied to the measurement of paravertebral muscle fat infiltration in the lumbar spine, and can provide quantitative indicators for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with lower back pain and the evaluation of treatment effects.Paravertebral muscle fat atlas can serve as a new biomarker based on medical imaging.
