A Case-control Study of the Effect of Vegetables and Fruits on the Risk of Tuberculosis Pathogenesis

Abstract:ObjectiveTo study the effect of vegetables and fruits on the risk of tuberculosis pathogenesis.Methods A matched case _ control study was used. From August 2012 to December 2013, 258 new tuberculosis cases were enrolled in Guangzhou Chest Hospital, and 258 controls were recruited from Dengfeng community of Guangzhou city. A face_to _face interview about economic characteristics of population and food frequency was adopted to collect dietary intakes 1 year prior to interviews.Results The study results showed that vegetables and fruits could reduce the risk of tuberculosis pathogenesis. Compared to the respective amount of 251/192(male/female) g/d and 34.4/60.8(male/female) g/d, when the intakes of vegetables and fruits were respectively to 573 / 698 (male/female) g/d and 336/343 (male/female) g/d, the tuberculosis risks were respectively 0.02 (0.01 _ 0.12) and 0.01 (0.00 _ 0.04), and possessing respectively linear trend(P< 0.001).ConclusionsIncreased intake of vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of tuberculosis pathogenesis .
