Research progress on the combined application of traditional Chinese and western medicine in the treatment of melasma

Abstract:Melasma is a common pigmented skin disorder,typically presenting symmetrically on sun-exposed areas of the skin.It is more prevalent among middle-aged and young women and can severely affect both physical and mental health in more serious cases.The pathogenesis of melasma involves genetic factors,ultraviolet(UV)exposure,and hormonal fluctuations,while Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)attributes the condition t o an imbalance in the flow of Qi and blood,with a clos e relationshi p to the liver,spleen,and kidney.Treatment of melasma is challenging,as single therapies often fail to de liver satisfactory results and are prone to recurrence.As a result,combination therapies have become a focus of recent research.This review,based on relevant literature from the past three years,explores the TCM understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of melasma,and provides an overview of the research progress on the combined application of Traditiona l Chinese and Western medicine in its treatment.The advant ages and limitations of such a pproaches are discussed to offer new insights and methods for the clinical treatment of m elasma.
