Advances in the treatment of non cosmetic skin diseases by botulinum neurotoxin type-A
LI Ming-xin
Abstract:Botulinum neurotoxin type-A is secreted by Clostridium botulinum. It can inhibit the acetylcholine and some substance released at the presynaptic neuromuscular junction. The effect and safety for improving wrinkle and muscle spasm in cosmetic dermatology and in neuropathy is well established. The clinical practice and experiments have shown that botulinum neurotoxin type-A has the effect of inhibiting fibroblast cells proliferation, anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritis. We have systemically reviewed the evidence for the non-cosmetic dermatological uses of botulinum neurotoxin type-A. This article presents the studies showing promising results for the use of botulinum neurotoxin type-A in a multitude of dermatological diseases. There is, however, the need for larger, double-blinded randomized control trials and injection dose and frequency against established treatments to cement the evidence base underlying the use of botulinum neurotoxin type-A in dermatology.
