Assessment of the amount of microvessels in the lower eyelid of infraorbital dark circles using in-vivo laser relfectance confocal microscopy
Abstract:Objective To assess the amount changes of microvessels in the lower eyelid with dark-brown type of infraorbital dark circles (DC). Methods The skin biopsies were collected among the 70 patients who received plastic surgery of the lower eyelid, one half of whom had DC. The subjects were divided into two groups:A (<30 yrs) and B (31~40 yrs), and each group was divided into four grades:normal, mild, moderate and heavy. The dermal melanin deposition and the amount of microvessels of these subjects were examined using in-vivo laser relfectance confocal microscopy (RCM). Results Signiifcant increase in the density of microvessels was observed in the moderate and heavy group with mainly red/violet and dark/brown group with DC compared to those without. The differences between mild and moderate group, moderate and heavy group were statistically signiifcant. Conclusion An increase of microvessels amount was observed at the site of lower eyelid with dark circles. The increase of microvessels amount seems to be one of the factors that induce dark circles.
