Abstract:Several domestic and foreign studies indicate that, vitiligo is often accompanied by other autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, pernicious anemia, SLE, Addison's disease, alopecia areata, etc, of which the most common is AITD, including the Graves disease, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (hashimoto's disease), subacute thyroiditis, thyroid associated ophthalmopathy. But the exact pathogenesis of vitiligo complicated with AITD remains to be elusive. As we know, vitiligo is a multifactorial polygenic disorder with a complex pathogenesis, linked with both genetic and non-genetic factors. There is a speculation on the interaction of genes with environment and immune system leads to convergent terminal pathway of oxidative stress–autoimmunity-mediated melanocyte loss, particularly in the non-segmental vitiligo (NSV). Thus, this article tries to explain the relationship between vitiligo and AITD on the basis of genetics, autoimmunnity and oxidative stress.
