Abstract:Polysaccharide such as β-glucans is the major component of fungal surfaces. Recognition of these molecules by the innate immune system triggers inlfammatory responses and activation of microbicidal mechanisms mediated by myeloid cells. This review will depict in details how the property of β-glucans and their receptor dectin-1 contributes to its immunostimulating effect in hosts and the potential uses ofβ-glucans by elucidating the dectin-1 signal transduction pathway. These studies will undoubtedly open a new research area on their potential therapeutic applications, including immunostimulants for antifungal agents.
