Clinical effect of low-dose prednisone for pain control during 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy of condyloma acuminatum
Abstract:Objective To observe the effects of low-dose prednisone for pain control during 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy of condyloma acuminatum. Methods The treatment group (51cases) received low-dose prednisone 20mg about 30 minutes before the irradiation, the control group (49 cases) given not any drugs before irradiation. Pain scores were recorded using the numeric rating scale (NRS) at pre-deifned assessments (at 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes after the start of treatment). The highest pain scores of the two groups at ifve assessment points were compared. The clinical efifcacy and recurrence rates after the last treatment (1st, 2nd, 4th, 12th and 24th week) were evaluated. Results The pain dominated by characteristics such as burning and pricking was almost local and superifcial. The difference was statistically signiifcant about the median highest pain scores (P<0.05). The difference had no statistical signiifcance (P>0.05) for the comparison of the cure rate (treatment group 80.4%, control group 81.6%) and recurrence rates (treatment group 19.6%, control group18.4%). Conclusion Low-dose prednisone can relieve the pain during irradiation of 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy and does not affect the clinical curative effect.
