Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with traditional Chinese medicine lotion in the treatment of acne.MethodsTotal 41 patients who were diagnosed as level II-IV acne by Pillsbury's categorization method were randomly divided into treatment group (22 subjects) and control group (19 subjects), all the patients in the two groups were treated with PDT, meanwhile the patients in the treatment group received traditional Chinese medicine lotion after the PDT. Efficacy and adverse effects were observed and recorded.ResultsTwelve subjects in treatment group showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease in GAGS score compared with twelve subjects in control group. In the aspect of adverse effects, there's no signiifcant difference between the two groups in occurrence rate of erythema, tumidness, desquamation, reactive acne and facial itching. However, treatment group had a signiifcant lower occurrence rate of hyperpigmentation (P<0.05), and the duration of erythema, tumidness, desquamation, reactive acne and facial itching were significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). ConclusionsExternal application of traditional Chinese medicine lotion has a certain supportive effect in the treatment of acne, and may decrease the damage of skin as well as adverse effects caused by PDT. The combination of PDT and traditional Chinese medicine lotion is recommendable in the clinical treatment of acne.
