Detection of human herpesvirus 8 in Kaposi's sarcoma by immunohistochemistry
Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility and diagnostic signiifcance of immunohistochemistry in detecting of human herpesvirus 8(HHV-8) for Kaposi's sarcoma(KS). Methods The expression of HHV-8 was detected by immunohistochemistry in 58 cases of KS and 40 cases of pyogenic granuloma tissue. Results Among 58 cases of KS in the dermis, 55 cases were positive (94.83%). Among 40 cases of pyogenic granuloma, none was positive. The difference of HHV-8 expression between KS and pyogenic granuloma had statistical signiifcance (P<0.05). The expression of HHV-8 in the epidermis of KS, 4 cases were positive(6.90%). 53 cases were positive (91.38%) in the vascular endothelial cell of KS. 55 cases were positive (94.83%) in the spindle cell of the dermis of KS. The proportion of positive cells were higher in the nodules stage of KS than patch stage and plaque stage. The difference of the positive cell proportion in the different stages of KS had statistical signiifcance (P<0.05). Conclusion The immunohistochemical detection of HHV-8 in KS has diagnostic signiifcance.
