Abstract:The surgery-first approach(SFA)has currently become a mainstream modality for treating severe skeletal malocclusion.Compared with the traditional orthodontic-first approach,SFA offers advantages such as shorter treatment duration, immediate restoration of facial aesthetics, and higher patient satisfaction, while demonstrating similar postoperative stability. However,SFA exhibits significant differences in postoperative orthodontic treatment compared with the traditional orthodontic-first approach. This article provides a compre-hensive review of simulation prediction and treatment planning under the SFA modality, surgical occlusion setup, timing of initiating post-operative orthodontic treatment,as well as novel orthodontic techniques.
