Abstract:Objective To explore the symmetry of hard and soft tissues of patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion and facial asymmetry change after orthognathic surgery. Methods Twenty-two patients diagnosed with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion and facial asymmetry who underwent orthognathic surgery were enrolled.Three-dimensional facial scanning images(3DMd)and cone-beam comput-ed tomography scans(CBCT)were obtained before and after surgery.Totally 17 landmarks,5 groups of symmetrical lines and 6 angles were selected and their change after the surgery was analyzed. Results Before the surgery, the distance between cheilion and labial in-ferius on imbalanced sides was shorter than that on contralateral sides, and so was the distance between gonion and menton both on hard and soft tissues. After the surgery, the distance between gonion and menton of soft tissues on imbalanced sides was greater than that on contralateral sides. The angle of gonion line increased after the surgery. The asymmetry index of the landmarks on alae nasi, lip, chin and mandible decreased significantly after the surgery(P>0.05).Conclusion After orthognathic surgery, symmetry of alae nasi, lips, chin and mandible was significantly improved. However, the mandibular angle and soft tissue are still partially asymmetrical.
