Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of early psychological intervention on the psychological status and postoperative satisfaction of patients seeking aesthetic improvements who underwent plastic and cosmetic surgery. Methods From November 2015 to June 2016,512 patients seeking aesthetic improvements who underwent plastic and cosmetic surgery were randomly divided into a control group (n=251) and an intervention group (n=261).Conventional treatment and care were applied to the control group preoperatively. For the intervention group,in addition to general treatment and care, preoperative consultation talks were given to assist patients in understanding the psychological characteristics of patients seeking aesthetic improvements in an attempt to adjust their motivations and expectations. The Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were introduced for patients' psychological assessment before and after the intervention.Six months after surgery, the satisfaction of the two groups was compared to assess the effect of early psychological intervention. Results The SAS and SDS score in the intervention group after psychological intervention was significantly lower than that before the intervention, and postoperative anxiety and depression was significantly relieved. No significant changes were seen in the control group before and after surgery. In the intervention group,87 cases (33.3%) were greatly satisfied,153 cases (58.6%) were fairly satisfied, and 21 cases (8.1%) were not satisfied. In the control group,53 cases (21.1%) were greatly satisfied,165 cases (65.7%) were fairly satisfied, and 33 cases were not satisfied (13.2%).The overall satisfaction rate of the intervention group was higher than that of the control group. The differences were significant (P<0.01).Conclusion Early psychological interventions can improve the mental health status of patients seeking aesthetic improvements and can also improve postoperative satisfaction with plastic and cosmetic surgery.More attention should be paid to early psychological interventions in plastic and cosmetic surgery.
