Abstract:Objective To explore the independent risk factors of expander exposure after the first stage of soft tissue expansion, and to provide reference for reducing its incidence. Methods A retrospective analysis was made of all patients who underwent soft tissue expansion at the department of plastic surgery of Xijing Hospital from January 2003 to December 2012.Demographic information was collected from the medical record of each patient.A total of 3382 expanders in 2056 patients were compared through the single factor logistic regression method.A multivariate logistic regression was introduced to calculate the potential risk factors with a statistical difference (P<0.01).The Backward Conditional method was used for stepwise regression analysis, and risk factors were identified if the P-value was less than 0.05.Results In 2056 patients (3382 expanders),there were 175 (5.2%) implants exposed after the first stage of soft tissue expansion.Statistical analysis revealed that the position of expander placement was the independent risk factor for expander exposure. Conclusion Exposure of the expander was more likely to happen when the expander was placed in the post aurem, face, neck,or upper limb. The results provide important reference significance for reducing the expander exposure in clinical application.
