Retrospective analysis of 98 cases of oral and maxillofacial space infection in children

Abstract:Objective To discuss the clinical features of oral and maxillofacial space infection in children and provide a basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 98 hospitalized pediatric patients with oral and maxillofacial space infection from Jan.2007 to Dec.2016.Results The 98 children with oral and maxillofacial infections were an average age of 4.34 years.The male/female ratio was 1.13∶1.00.Submandibular space infection was the most common,where the main infection source was lymphadenitis infection.The second most common was in the buccal space,where the main infection source was odontogenic.Staphylococcus aureus,Hemolytic streptococcus,and Escherichia coli were the common pathogenic bacteria.Conclusion Successful treatment of these characteristic pediatric oral and maxillofacial space infections will involve treatment based on the results of germiculture and bacterial susceptibility tests while employing a comprehensive therapy to improve the clinical outcome.
