Abstract:Objective To compare the efficacy and adverse reactions to Fractional Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser and Erbium-Doped Yttrium Garnet (Er∶YAG) laser for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. Methods From January 2016 to May 2017 thirty patients with atrophic acne scars were randomly selected and treated with Fractional CO2 laser on one side and with fractional Er∶YAG laser on the other side, using a single treatment.Digital photography was taken before,1 and 3 months after treatment. The photographs were analyzed and the efficacy of and adverse reactions to the two kinds of dot-matrix laser were statistically compared using efficacy criteria and é chelle d'évaluation chiniquc dcs cicatricesd'acné (ECCA).Results The efficacy rate of fractional CO2 laser was 96.7% and 90.0% of fractional Er:YAG laser, but there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05).In the fractional CO2 laser group, grades of pain were significantly higher than those in the fractional Er∶YAG laser group (5.97 ± 1.07 vs 4.33 ± 0.94) (P < 0.05).However,downtimes were significantly shorter in the fractional CO2 laser group than those in the fractional Er:YAG laser group (5.20 ± 1.35vs 6.40 ± 1.22) (P < 0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or persistence erythema. Conclusion Fractional CO2 laser and Fractional Er∶YAG lasers are both effective for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. They are both safe, have less side effects than other treatment options and allow for rapid recovery after surgery. There is greater pain associated with the former treatment, but also less downtime and greater efficacy.
