Abstract:Objective The histomorphologic changes of masseter muscle after botulinum toxin A injection were observed. Methods From April 2011 to October 2015,60 patients with bilateral mandibular and masseter hypertrophy were involved in this study. There were a total of 120 masseter muscle specimens.Among them,60 specimens without botulinum toxin A injection were selected as the control group, and the other 60 specimens, with botulinum toxin A injection,as the experimental group.Paraffin section and HE staining were performed in both two groups.Basic structure of the masseter muscle fiber was observed under light microscope and the cross-sectional area was measured. The data above were analyzed statistically. Results No change of the basic structure of the masseter muscle fiber was found between the two groups.Compared to the control group, the cross-section area of the masseter muscle fiber decreased more significantly (P<0.05).The cross-section area of the masseter muscle fiber reached a minimum at the 12th week and gradually recovered after that.No further changes were noticed after another 12-week interval. Conclusion Masseter muscle atrophied after Botulinum toxin A injection. The masseter muscle reached a minimum at the 12th week, and no obvious change occurred after that.
