Repairment of traumatic skin defect of lower leg with superficial sural artery island skin flaps
Abstract:Objective Looking for a better method in reconstructing soft-tissue defect of lower leg, ankle and foot. Methods Anatomical study was performed on 21 legs by dye infusion, arteriography and microsurgical anatomy to show the role of the vascular axis that follows the sural nerve in suppling the skin. 16 patients were operated with the method. Results Superficial sural artery concomitants with sural nerve through deep fascia, and distributes many nutrition branches at superior-middle portion of leg, and give nutrition to one-third posterior crural region skin. Conclusion The blood supply of the flap is reliable; elevation is easy, major arteries are not injured. It is very useful in reconstructing the soft tissue defect of the lower leg, ankle and the foot.
