Llizarov Bone Transportation to Treatment Large Bone Defect of Tibial Traumatic Osteomyelitis
Abstract:Objective To discuss clinical outcomes of Ilizarov technique in managing large bone defect of tibial traumatic osteomyelitis. Methods From June 2010 to September 2014 we treated 15 patients with long bone defect of tibial traumatic osteomyelitis, according to the Cierny-Mader anatomical Classification. The osteomyelitis was of type Ⅲ in 6 cases and of typeⅣ in 9. They were treated by resection of the lesion segments and Ilizarov bone transportation,Bone lengthening distance,ex-ternal fixation time, bone healing and functional recovery were recorded and analyzed. Results The fifteen patients were fol-lowed up for 18 to 40 months,at the last follow-up,bone defect were achieved in all patients. The length of bone defect was 6 to 13 cm(average,8. 6 cm). The external fixation time was 8. 4 ~ 16. 5 months(avergue,11. 2 months). There were no cases of deep infection, nonunion or stiffness of the joint. According to the modified ASAMI criteria for bone healing,12 cases were ex-cellent,one good, one moderate, one poor, with an excellent to good rate of 87. 3% . The functional recovery was rated as excel-lent in 10 cases, good in 2,moderate in 3,giving an excellent to good rate of 80. 0% . Conclusion The Ilizarov bone transpor-tation is effective in treating tibial traumatic osteomyelitis with large bone defects.
