A Randomized Trial of Arthroscopic Intervention for Moderate and Severe Osteoarthritis of the Knee
Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effects of arthroscopic intervention for moderate and severe knee OA. Methods We enrolled 118 patients with knee osteoarthritis in our study from Jan. 2009 to Jan. 2012 and randomly assigned them to surgery - group in which patients received arthroscopic intervention with physical and medical therapy and to control -group in which they received physical and medical therapy alone. The outcome was evaluated WOMAC score with 1 and 2 years after the treatment. Results There were 56 patients patients assigned to surgery - group, and 51 patients assigned to control -group. After 1 and 2 years, the mean WOMAC score for the surgery group was(624 ± 98), (865 ± 589), compared with(902 ± 521), (914 ± 605)for the control - group. At the first visit, WOMAC score of surgery - group was significantly decreased than that of control-group(P<0. 05), while, at the second visit, these differences had no statistic Significance(P < 0. 05). Conclusion This study shows that limited arthroscopic surgery can relieve symptoms of knee OA for a short term(≤1 year).
