Abstract:Objective:To analyze the relationship between saliva flow rate(SFR),pH and buffer capacity(SBC)of saliva and the incidence of dental caries in patients with xerostomia,to provide relevant reference for early clinical inter-vention of caries in xerostomia patients. Methods:All 180 xerostomia patients(mouth dry group)founded in the stoma-tological clinic in first visit were included in this study. At the same time,180 sex and age-matched healthy samples without systematic diseases(control group)were selected as control group in the physical examination center. The oral examination and saliva of both groups were tested. The caries rate, decayed missing of filled teeth(DMFT),unstimulat-ed total salivar flow rate(UWSFR),stimuated total salivar flow rate(SWSFR),pH and salive buffer capacity(SBC)of the two groups were compared. The relationship between DMFT and salivary characteristics of xerostomia patients was analyzed by SPSS 20.0 statistical software. Results:The caries rate and DMFT in xerostomia patients were significantly higher than those in control group, the xerostomia patients are not only mainly characterized by a reduction in UWSFR,but their UWSFR,SWSFR,PH and SBC of saliva were significantly lower than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.01).DMFT is negatively correlated with UWSFR,SWSFR in xerosto-miapatients,but there was no significant correlation(P>0.0 5).DMFT is obviously negatively correlated with pH(r=-0.66,P=0.001)and SBC(r=-0.301,P=0.002)of saliva. Conclusion:Xerostomia patients are at high risk of caries, and the degree of caries is more serious. There was no linear correlation between the decrease of SFR and the se-verity of caries, but only a weak correlation with the high incidence of caries. The decrease of pH and SBC of saliva may be the key factors for the severe caries in xerostomia patients.
