A qualitative study on intergenerational programs among elderly people with mild cognitive impairment conducted by young parents

Abstract:Objective:To explore the true thoughts of young Chinese parents on the application of intergenerational programs in the elderly population with mild cognitive impairment,and to provide reference for health education strategies and clinical practices.Methods:Using purposive sampling method,a total of 22 parents of children aged 0-14 who received treatment in the pediatric ward of a tertiary grade A hospital in Jiangsu province from November to December 2024 were selected.Based on the theory of knowledge,attitude,and practice theoretical model,data were collected through semi-structured interviews.Colaizzi 7-step analysis method was used to analyze.Results:A total of 4 themes and 10 sub-themes were extracted:understanding and attitude towards mild cognitive impairment in the elderly(mainly based on life experience,diverse but insufficient professional channels of understanding,attitude and ideas for improving cognitive impairment),understanding and attitude towards intergenerational programs(vague concept,high support rate and core motivation,implementation concerns),current situation of interaction between family and society(limitations of family interaction,diverse forms of community activities),community and institutional demands(resource support,institutional innovation).Conclusions:Promoting intergenerational programs requires strengthening the popularization of professional knowledge,constructing practical models for families and communities,and promoting institutional optimization and innovation.
