Abstract:Objective:To translate Ankle Instability Instrument(AII)into Chinese and to test its reliability and validity. Methods:The AII was translated and cross-culturally adapted. The Chinese version of AII was formed.A total of 1850 university students from six institutions in Henan province were surveyed by convenience sampling. The reliability and validity of the scale were tested. Results:The Chinese version of AII comprised 8 items divided into three dimensions, namely injury history and management, functional instability, and stair/complex scenario instability. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 66.20%.The three-factor model demonstrated a good fit.The composite reliability of the three dimensions ranged from 0.80 to 0.85.The average variance extracted ranged from 0.53 to 0.59.The square root of the average variance extracted for each dimension(0.73-0.77)was greater than its correlation coefficients with other dimensions(0.37-0.55).The heterotrait-monotrait ranged from 0.49 to 0.68.The total score and dimension scores of the Chinese AII were negatively correlated with scores on the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure and the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool, and positively correlated with scores on the Visual Analogue Scale(all P<0.05).The Cronbach's α coefficient of the Chinese version of AII was 0.88,the split-half reliability was 0.86,and the retest reliability was 0.87(P<0.01).Conclusions:The Chinese version of AII demonstrates good reliability and validity. It could be used as a tool for measuring functional ankle instability.
