Abstract:Objective:To explore the application effect of a modified fall risk assessment tool combined with patient-participation interventions in hospitalized elderly patients at high risk of falls. Methods:Expert consultation was used to improve the Chinese version of the i Engaging Fall self-Assessment Tool, and a pre-survey was conducted on 270 eligible patients.Using convenience sampling method,high-risk elderly patients admitted to the geriatric department of a hospital in Wuhan city from February 2022 to June 2024 were selected as the research subjects. They were divided into a control group(n=236),observation group 1(n=235),and observation group 2(n=232).The control group used the Chinese Version of the i Engaging Fall Self-Assessment Scale. The Observation group 1 used the Modified Chinese Version of the i Engaging Fall Self-Assessment Scale. The observation group 2 received the Modified Chinese Version of the i Engaging Fall Self-Assessment Scale combined with patient-participation interventions. The incidence of falls, the workload of fall prevention nurses, and fall alertness among three groups were evaluated. Results:In the control group,4 cases experienced falls, with a fall incidence rate of 0.195%.In observation group 1,3 cases experienced falls, with an incidence rate of 0.131%;In observation group 2,only one person fell, with an incidence rate of 0.047%.There were no statistically significant differences in terms of the occurrence of falls among three groups(P>0.05).The duration of fall protection in observation group 2 was shorter than that in observation group 1 and control group(P<0.05).The duration of fall assessment was longer than that in observation group 1 and control group(P<0.05).The total score of the Fall Vigilance Scores and the dimensions of activity safety and environmental alert, physical function alert, drug alert, and cognitive behavioral alert in observation group 2 were higher than those in the control group and observation group 1(P<0.05).Conclusions:Modified fall assessment tools combined with patient-participation interventions could reduce nursing workload, enhance patients' fall vigilance, and promote patient safety.
