Qualitative study on the facilitators and barriers to implementing physician-nurse joint clinic in tertiary general hospitals

Abstract:Objective:To identify the facilitators and barriers to implementing physician-nurse joint clinic in tertiary general hospitals.Methods:A total of 14 nursing experts from a tertiary general hospital in Shanghai were selected as subjects in December 2024 by purposive sampling.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews.Data were analyzed using the Colaizzi 7-step analysis method.Results:Three themes each for facilitators and barriers were identified.Facilitators included increased recognition of physician-nurse joint clinic,availability of essential conditions for implementation,and demonstrated effectiveness.Barriers included patient cognitive biases,negative attitudes among healthcare professionals,and limitations in objective conditions.Conclusions:Physician-nurse joint clinic creates opportunities for the development of nursing disciplines but also is faced with challenges.It is essential to leverage their strengths and address limitations to provide higher-quality healthcare services for patients.
