Application of indoor gardening course in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment in pension institution

Abstract:Objective:To explore the impact of indoor horticulture course on the cognitive function of elderly people with mild cognitive impairment in pension institution.Methods:From March 2024 to June 2024,80 elderly people with mild cognitive impairment in a pension institution in Guangzhou city were selected.Among them,40 elderly people in Park B were set as the control group,and the other 40 elderly people in Park A were set as the gardening group.The control group was given routine care in the park and participated in daily leisure activities.The gardening group attended 10-week indoor horticulture course on the basis of routine care.The scores of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale(MoCA),Auditory Verbal Learning Test(AVLT),Verbal Fluency Test(VFT),Boston Naming Test(BNT),Shape Trails Test-A(STT-A),Shape Trails Test-B(STT-B),and Digital Span Test(DST)were compared between the two groups of elderly people with mild cognitive impairment before and after the intervention.Results:After the intervention,the scores of MoCA,AVLT(immediate memory)and DST in the gardening group were higher than those in the control group,and all were statistically significant(all P<0.05).Conclusions:Indoor horticulture courses were helpful in enhancing the attention,memory and orientation of elderly people with mild cognitive impairment in pension institution.It could improve their overall cognitive function.It is an effective non-pharmaceutical intervention method to delay the progression of the elderly from mild cognitive impairment to dementia.
