Application effect evaluation on the clinical practice teaching protocol for nursing undergraduates in midwifery

Abstract:Objective:To explore the application effect of the clinical practice teaching protocol for nursing undergraduates in midwifery based on core midwifery competencies.Methods:A total of 62 undergraduates in midwifery at Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University were selected as the study subjects by purposive sampling from July 2019 to April 2023.A self-assessment questionnaire on core midwifery competencies and focus group interviews were conducted to survey the students.Results:The total score of core competency after the internship(311.46±46.17)was higher than that before the internship(243.13±50.61),with a statistically significant difference(P<0.001).Five core themes were extracted from the interviews,namely high recognition of the teaching program,noticeable effectiveness of interactive teaching methods,advantages and limitations of joint teaching by outpatient medical and nursing staff,relatively insufficient practice time and delivery opportunities during the delivery period,and divergent professional perceptions against the backdrop of declining birth rates.Conclusions:The clinical practice teaching protocol for nursing undergraduates in midwifery based on core midwifery competencies could effectively enhances core midwifery competencies of students.Teaching administrators should appropriately increase practice time of students during the delivery period,standardize collaborative teaching models between medical and nursing staff,and improve professional identity of students.
