Qualitative study on the cognition and attitude of psychiatric nurses towards the participation of patients with severe mental disorders in shared decision-making

Abstract:Objective:To understand the cognition and attitude of psychiatric nurses towards the participation of patients with severe mental disorders in shared decision-making,so as to provide support for promoting the application of shared decision-making in psychiatric nursing practice.Methods:From April to June 2024,16 front-line clinical nurses from a tertiary grade A hospital in Huai'an city were selected for semi-structured interviews.The interview data were analyzed using the Colaizzi 7-step analysis method.Results:A total of three themes were extracted:the cognition of psychiatric nurses on the participation of patients with severe mental disorders in shared decision-making,the diversity of attitudes towards the participation of patients with severe mental disorders in shared decision-making,and the insufficiency and suggestions of the application of shared decision-making in patients with severe mental disorders.Conclusions:Psychiatric nurses generally recognize the importance of patients with severe mental disorders participating in shared decision-making.It is suggested to form a multi-disciplinary team,improve the implementation of the shared decision-making support system,in order to promote the implementation of shared decision-making among patients with severe mental disorders.
