Sinicization of Fear and Avoidance of Memory Loss Scale for the elderly and its reliability and validity test

Abstract：Objective:To translate the Fear and Avoidance of Memory Loss Scale(FAM)into Chinese and test its reliability and validity among community-dwelling elderly people.Methods:After obtaining the authorization from the original author,the Chinese version of FAM was developed through the Brislin double translation-back translation model,cross-cultural adaptation and pre-survey.A total of 310 elderly people from 2 communities in Xianyang city were surveyed to test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of FAM.Results:The Chinese version of FAM extracted 2 common factors,namely fear and avoidance,with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 69.075%.The Cronbach's α coefficient of the total scale was 0.934.And the Cronbach's α coefficients of the fear and avoidance dimensions were 0.939 and 0.915 respectively.The split-half reliability of the scale was 0.852.The test-retest reliability of the scale was 0.971(P<0.01).Conclusions:The Chinese version of FAM has good reliability and validity.And it can be used as an effective tool for assessing the current situation of fear and avoidance of memory loss among the elderly in China.
