Effects of intergenerational support and depression on social isolation in the elderly

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the effects of intergenerational support,depression and their interactions on social isolation in the elderly.Methods:A total of 1 133 elderly people from 8 communities in Hefei city were investigated by general data questionnaire,Lubben Social Network Scale,Intergenerational Support Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale.Results:The total score of social isolation in this group was(12.26+4.95).There were 465 elderly people with social isolation(41.0%).There were 837 elderly people with good intergenerational support(73.9%).And 304 elderly people had depression(26.8%).After controlling for related confounding factors,Logistic regression showed that poor intergenerational support and depression were the influencing factors of social isolation in the elderly(P<0.05).The results of interaction analysis showed that poor intergenerational support and depression had an additive interaction on social isolation in the elderly(P<0.05).Conclusions:Intergenerational support and depression were the risk factors of social isolation in the elderly.And they had an additive interaction.
