Abstract:Objective:To explore the effects of Omega-3 essential fatty acid diet intervention for the treatment of patients with xerophthalmia. Methods:The randomized controlled trials(RCTs) studies on effects of Omega3 essential fatty acids diet intervention in the treatment of patients with xerophthalmia were retrieved from PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,CINAHL,CNKI and Wanfang database.By evaluation of literature quality and data extraction, the outcome indicators including Tear breakup time(TBUT),Schirmer's test and ocular surface disease index(OSDI).Results:A total of 7 RCTs were included, with mostly moderate literature quality. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the dietary intervention of Omega-3 essential fatty acids could effectively improve the TBUT results and Schirmer's test results of patients with xerophthalmia, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).In addition, the dietary intervention of Omega-3 essential fatty acids had a tendency to improve OSDI,but the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.06).Conclusions:Omega-3 essential fatty acid diet intervention could benefit patients with xerophthalmia. However, the corresponding methodological defects were still to be overcome in future studies.
