Survey of status quo of quality of life of empty nester in Lanzhou city

Abstract：Objective:To know about the status quo of quality of life of empty nester in Lanzhou city,so as to provide a theoretical basis for carrying out the intervention for improving the quality of life of the empty nester in Lanzhou.Methods:The multi stage random sampling method was adopted,and a total of 608 empty nester and non empty nester from Lanzhou city were surveyed by general situation questionnaire,brief health status scale (SF 36)and social support rating scale from June 2014 to December 2014.Results:The prevalence rate of chronic disease in empty nester in Lanzhou city was 72.6%,the prevalence rate of chronic disease in non empty nester was 66.4%,and there was no statistically significant difference between both groups.The quality of life of empty nester in 6 dimensions scores including physical role,general health,vitality,social function,emotional role,mental health and total score of quality of life were lower than those of non empty nester (P<0.05).The total social support score and all dimensions scores of empty nester were lower than those of non empty nester (P<0.05).Conclusion:Empty nester had higher prevalence of chronic disease,their quality of life was lower than that of non empty nester in Lanzhou city.Therefore the society and family should care for empty nester, and formulate the feasible measures to improve the quality of life of empty nester.
