Relationship between health literacy and health service utilization of empty nester elderly with chronic obstructive emphysema

Abstract:Objective:To study the relationship between health literacy and health service utilization of empty nester elderly with chronic obstructive emphysema.Methods:A total of 331 empty nester elderly with chronic obstructive emphysema were selected in our hospital from March 2014 to December 2015 by Health Literacy Scale and General Condition Questionnaire.Single factor analysis was used to investigate the relationship be-tween patients’health literacy,social demographic characteristics and utilization of health services;Multiple lin-ear regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of health literacy.Results:Sociodemographic character-istics of single factor analysis showed that the health literacy scores of different age,genders,race,level of edu-cation,engaged occupation,marital status,family number,and the average monthly household income in empty nester with chronic obstructive emphysema had statistically significant differences(P<0.05);in the utilization of health services,the health literacy scores of the time since the last examination and health education had sta-tistical significant differences(P<0.05);ethnic,once/now engaged in occupation,education level,health educa-tion,and the time since the last examination were the independent risk factors for health literacy.Conclusion:Health literacy had a certain influence on health service utilization of empty nester elderly with chronic obstruc-tive emphysema.Health literacy level of patients could be improved by strengthening health education for them.
