Influence of peer support on self management behavior of community empty nest elderly diabetes patients and their blood glucose and body mass index

Abstract:Objective:To probe into the influence of peer support on self management behavior of community empty nest elderly diabetes patients and their blood glucose and body mass index.Methods:A total of 102 empty nest elderly diabetic patients in Beijing community health service center were selected by convenience sampling, and then they were randomly divided into intervention group (n=50)and control group (n=52).The patients in control group received routine health education,the patients in intervention group received the peer support for six months.The patients’HbA1 c and BMI were measured before the intervention,three months and six months after the intervention.Results:The HbA1 c was compared between both groups before and after inter-vention,F time =5 1.606,P <0.01,F interaction =40.172,P <0.01;The BMI was compared between both groups,F time =63.988,P < 0.01,F interaction = 58.586,P < 0.01.There were statistically significant differences in diet manage-ment,sports management,monitoring of blood glucose,foot care,medication compliance situation between the two groups at 3 months and 6 months after the intervention(P <0.01 ).Conclusion:Peer support can improve the situation of blood glucose control of community empty nest elderly diabetic patients,reduce their body weight index and effectively improve the self management behavior.
