Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the effect of selenium yeast on the reproductive performance, egg selenium content and egg quality of meat breeding pigeons and antioxidant performance of squabs.A total of 1 056 pairs of 48-month-old European meat pigeons with similar weight were selected and randomly divided into four groups, with three replicates per group, and 88 pairs of meat breeding pigeons per replicate. The control group(group A)was fed a basal diet, while the groups B,C,and D fed 0.5,1.0,and 1.5 mg/kg of yeast selenium, respectively(calculated by selenium content). The pre-test period was seven days, and the formal test period was 60 days. The results showed that the fertilization rates and the selenium content of pigeon eggs in groups C and D were significantly higher than those of group A(P<0.05).Selenium supplementation could significantly increase the activities of glutathione peroxidase and total superoxide dismutase in squabs(P<0.05),and significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase(P<0.05).The study indicates that adding yeast selenium to the diet of meat breeding pigeons can increase the fertilization rate, raise the selenium content in pigeon eggs, and enhance the antioxidant capacity of pigeon serum. The yeast selenium appropriate addition amount is 1.0 mg/kg.
