Effects of combination of oregano essential oil and probiotics on production performance,egg quality,and serum antioxidant indexes of Roman brown layers

Abstract：The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of the combination of oregano essential oil and probiotics on the production performance,egg quality,and serum antioxidant indexes of Roman brown layers.A total of 840 Roman brown layers around 50 weeks of age were randomly divided into seven groups,with 10 repeats in each group and 12 hens in each repeat.A 2 × 3 double-factor random trial design was adopted.The control group of Roman brown layers was fed a basal diet,the groups Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ were fed a basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg of oregano essential oil and 100,200 and 300 mg/kg of probiotics,respectively,and the groups Ⅳ,Ⅴ and Ⅵ were fed a basal diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg of oregano essential oil and 100,200 and 300 mg/kg of probiotics,respectively.The pre-test period was three days and the formal test period was 60 days.The results showed that compared with the control group,the feed-to-egg ratio in groups Ⅴ and Ⅵ was significantly reduced(P＜0.05),and the egg production rate was significantly increased(P＜0.05).Oregano essential oil had a significant effect on the feed to egg ratio and egg production rate(P＜0.05),probiotics had a significant effect on feed to egg ratio(P＜0.05),and there was an interaction between oregano essential oi and probiotics on feed to egg ratio(P＜0.05).The protein height,concentrated protein index,and Haugh units of groups Ⅳ,Ⅴand Ⅵ were significantly higher than that of the control group(P＜0.05).Oregano essential oil and probiotics had significant effects on protein height,concentrated protein index,and Haugh unit(P＜0.05),and there was an interaction(P＜0.05).The activities of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in serum of all experimental groups were significantly higher than that of the control group(P＜0.05),and the content of malondialdehyde was significantly reduced(P＜0.05).The total antioxidant capacity in serum of groups Ⅳ,Ⅴ and Ⅵ was significantly higher than that of the control group(P＜0.05).Oregano essential oil and probiotics had significant effects on anti oxidative indexes(P＜0.05),and there was an interaction between them(P＜0.05).The study indicates that adding oregano essential oil and probiotics to the diets of Roman brown layers can effectively increase the egg production rate,reduce the feed-to-egg ratio,improve the egg quality,and enhance the body's antioxidant function.Considering all aspects,the recommended dosages of oregano essential oil and probiotics is 200 mg/kg.
