Abstract:To maximize the utilization of Arundo donax L.germplasm resources, this study investigated the nutritional value and rumen degradation characteristics of Arundo donax L.hay at different plant heights for dairy cattle.A single-factor randomized design was employed with six treatment groups based on plant heights:1.5(Z1 group),1.8(Z2 group),2.0(Z3 group),2.3(Z4 group),2.6(Z5 group),and 3.0 m(Z6 group). After processing, the nutritional composition and rumen degradation parameters of each nutrient were determined. The results indicated that significant variations in nutrient content across plant heights. As plant height increased, crude protein content and relative feed value of Arundo donax L.decreased, while acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber content gradually increased. Both the 72-hour rumen degradation rates and effective degradation rates of dry matter, crude protein, organic matter, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber showed a declining trend with increasing plant height. The study shows that Arundo donax L.exhibits high crude protein content and moderate fiber content.During the early growth stage(plant heights of 1.5~2.0 m),dry matter, crude protein, organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber exhibited higher rumen degradation rates, suggesting its potential as a high-protein forage source for herbivores.
