Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of sodium butyrate on the growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and antioxidant function of grass carp.A total of 480 grass carp with similar body weight were randomly divided into four groups, with three replicates per group and 40 fish per replicate. The fish were fed diets supplemented with 0,0.05%,0.10%and 0.20%sodium butyrate, respectively. The trial lasted for 56 days. The results showed that compared with the control group, the final weight, weight gain rate, specific growth rate, and condition factor of grass carp in the 0.10%sodium butyrate group were significantly increased(P<0.05),while the feed conversion ratio was significantly decreased(P<0.05).The survival rate and protein efficiency of grass carp in the 0.10%and 0.20%sodium butyrate groups were significantly increased(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the serum total protein level and alkaline phosphatase activity in the 0.10%and 0.20%sodium butyrate groups were significantly increased(P<0.05),while the alanine aminotransferase activity was significantly decreased(P<0.05).The serum urea nitrogen and cholesterol levels in the 0.10%sodium butyrate group were significantly decreased(P<0.05).The aspartate aminotransferase activity in all sodium butyrate groups was significantly decreased(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the malondialdehyde level in the 0.10%sodium butyrate group was significantly decreased(P<0.05),while the superoxide dismutase activity and total antioxidant capacity were significantly increased(P<0.05).Compared with the control group, the activity of α-amylase and lipase in the intestine of grass carp in the 0.10%sodium butyrate group was significantly increased(P<0.05),and the trypsin activity in the 0.10%and 0.20%sodium butyrate groups was significantly increased(P<0.05).The study indicates that dietary supplementation of sodium butyrate can effectively improve the growth performance and serum biochemical indices of grass carp, enhance antioxidant capacity, and increase intestinal digestive enzyme activity. The optimal supplementation level of sodium butyrate in feed is 0.10%.
