Abstract:The study investigates the antibacterial activity of Clostridium butyricum against intestinal pathogens(Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Salmonella)in calves and its antioxidant properties. The inhibitory effect of Clostridium butyricum and its metabolites on Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella was determined by the diameter of the inhibition zone using Oxford Cup method. The antioxidant test is based on the 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine(DPPH)free radical, hydroxyl free radical, superoxide anion scavenging ability, and reducing power of Clostridium butyricum culture supernatant, bacterial suspension, and cell-free extract. The results showed that the Clostridium butyricum culture supernatant had the most significant inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Salmonella, which was significantly higher than those of bacterial suspension,cell-free extract and sterile distilled water(P<0.05).The inhibitory effect of bacterial suspension and cell-free extract on Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Salmonella was inferior to that of supernatant, which was significantly higher than that of sterile distilled water(P<0.05),and there was no significant difference between them(P>0.05).The DPPH free radical scavenging rate of Clostridium butyricum supernatant was significantly higher than that of bacterial suspension and cell-free extract(P<0.05).The hydroxyl radical scavenging rate of supernatant and bacterial suspension was significantly higher than that of cell-free extract(P<0.05).The scavenging rate of supernatant was significantly higher than that of bacterial suspension and cell-free extract(P<0.05).The order of reducing power was supernatant>bacterial suspension>cell-free extract(P<0.05).The study indicates that Clostridium butyricum has a certain inhibitory effect on pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract of livestock and poultry, and has antioxidant capacity.
