Abstract:The experiment aimed to study the effects of adding grape stem to the diet on the growth performance and serum indexes of sheep.A total of 30 Kazakh male lambs aged 4 to 6 months with similar body weight were randomly divided into three groups, with 10 replicates per group and one lamb per replicate. The control group(CK group)was fed a basic diet, while Group A and Group B were fed diets with grape stem replacing 10%of corn stalks and 8%alfalfa in the basic diet, respectively. The preliminary period was seven days, and the formal experimental period was 42 days. The results showed that Group A had the highest average daily dry matter intake, average daily weight gain from 1 to 20 days, and average daily weight gain from 1 to 42 days, and the lowest feed to gain ratio.Compared with the CK group, the concentrations of serum immunoglobulin A(IgA),immunoglobulin G(IgG),and immunoglobulin M(IgM)in Groups A and B were significantly or extremely increased(P<0.05 or P<0.01),while the concentrations of nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-6(IL-6)were extremely reduced(P<0.01).The total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC),superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),and catalase(CAT)activities in the serum of Groups A and B were extremely increased(P<0.01),and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA)was extremely reduced(P<0.01).The study indicates that adding grape stem to the diet can enhance the immunity and antioxidant capabilities of sheep, with the effect of replacing corn stalks with grape stem being particularly effective.
