Abstract:The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin C(VC)on the growth performance, plasma biochemical indexes, and antioxidant activity of finishing Hu sheep.A total of 20 healthy finishing Hu sheep with a body weight of(31.70±1.38)kg were randomly divided into two groups with 10 replicates per group and one sheep per replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, while the VC group was supplemented with 0.5 g/(each·day)of VC in the basal diet. The pre-test period was seven days, and the formal test period was 30 days. The results showed that compared to the control group, the average daily dry matter intake of the Hu sheep in the VC group was extremely increased(P<0.01),and the concentrations of total protein and creatinine in the plasma were extremely decreased(P<0.01),while the albumin content was significantly reduced(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in antioxidant indexes in the plasma of Hu sheep between the two groups(P>0.05).The study indicates that the addition of 0.5 g/(each·day)of VC in the diet can improve the intake of finishing Hu sheep, reduce the concentrations of plasma creatinine, total protein, and albumin. It is also speculated that an excessive dose of VC may affect the protein metabolism of finishing Hu sheep, leading to a failure to achieve the expected improvement in growth performance.
