Observation of non-motor symptoms and voxel-based MRI morphometric in early Parkinson disease patients
Abstract:Objective To investigate the characteristics of non-motor symptoms (NMS) and related abnormalities of brain gray matter structure in early Parkinson disease (PD) patients. Methods We detected the NMS in 34 early PD patients and investigated its correlation with age, duration, severity and the unified PD rating scale-Ⅲ (UPDRSⅢ).34clinically defined PD patients and 25 normal controls (NC) were examined using T1WI three-dimensional brain volume sequence. The data of two groups were analyzed using voxel based morphometry(VBM) to generate gray matter map. Results The number of NMS in PD group was significantly higher than NC group. The number of NMS was not correlated with age, course and MoCA scores in PD group;but positively correlated with UPDRSⅢ score,H-Y stage;and negatively correlated with MMSE score.Compared to NC group, decreased gray matter volume in PD group was observed in bilateral midfrontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral insular, right midtemporal gyrus, right cuneus, lingual gyrus, left transverse temporal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus.Bilateral frontal lobe atrophy was positively correlated with the number of NMS.Conclusions NMS can occur in early PD patients, suggesting that PD is a neurodegenerative disease involving multiple systems,NMS and loss of brain gray matter volume in PD patients are closely related.
