Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on serum brain -derived neurotrophic factor level in first-episode schizophrenia patients
Abstract:Objective To evaluate effects of adjunctive repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level in first -episode schizophrenia pa‐tients with predominantly negative symptoms .Methods In this randomized ,controlled ,double blind study ,70 schizophrenia outpatients who met the diagnostic criteria of ICD -10 ,based on general antip‐sychotics treatment ,were randomly divided into the rTMS group (n= 35)and the sham group (n= 35) . BDNF level and positive and negative symptoms scale (PANSS) were used to assess the efficacy at 0 and 4 weeks .Results After 4 weeks of treatment ,the total score ,negative symptoms score and general psy‐chopathology score of PANSS were significantly lower and the serum BDNF level was significantly higher in the rTMS group than that of the sham group (P < 0 .05) .No significant correlation was found be‐tween the changes of BDNF concentration and total scores or all factor scores of PANSS in the rTMS group (P > 0 .05) .There was no significant difference in side effects between two groups (P > 0 .05) . Conclusions The treatment of rTMS can increase the serum BDNF concentration in first -episode schiz‐ophrenia patients .There is no correlation between the changes of BDNF concentration and improved clin‐ical symptoms ,especially the negative symptom .
