Relationship between BDNF and depression with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between plasma brain-derived neurotrophic fac‐tor (BDNF) and depression with type 2 diabetes mellitus .Methods 210 patients with depression who re‐ceived treatment in our hospital from February ,2012 to November ,2013 were taken as our research ob‐jects .Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD)-17 was used to evaluate the severity of depression and measure the blood glucose of these patients .Based on their results ,we divided them into the obser‐vation group(depression with type 2 diabetes mellitus patients ,72) ,control 1 group (depression with non-type 2 diabetes mellitus patients ,138) Meanwhile ,we took 70 patients who had physical examina‐tion in our hospital and proved to be healthy in the same period as control 2 group .We adopted the ELISA method to measure the level of BDNF in the serum of the three groups ;and we adopted the PCR-RFLP method to test the BDNF (Val66Met) gene polymorphisms .We analyzed the correlation of BD‐NF (Val66Met) gene polymorphisms with depression .Results There were significant difference on the level of BDNF in the serum in three groups (F = 18 .73 ,P < 0 .05) .The HAMD scores of observation group were lower than group 1 (t = - 3 .423 ,P < 0 .01) .There exist statistical differences on genetic makeups of Val66Met in the three groups (P< 0 .05) .The Val66Met gene polymorphisms had a signifi‐cant correlation with depression (P < 0 .05) .Conclusions A strong correlation exists between BDNF and depression with type 2 diabetes mellitus .BDNF- Val66Met gene polymorphisms plays a key role in the pathogenesis of this disease .
