Evaluation of Dietary Quality Among Cancer Patients by Diet Balance Index

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the dietary quality of cancer patients in oncology department of Zhengzhou traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)Hospital,so as to provide the basis for future health education and nutrition intervention programs.Methods A random sampling method was used to select 52 adult patients admitted for the first time to oncology department of Zhengzhou TCM Hospital,"24-hour dietary review for 3 consecutive days"was adopted to collect dietary intake,and the diet balance index(DBI_22)scoring method was applied to evaluate the dietary quality.Results This study analyzed the dietary quality of 52 patients.Among them,30 cases were patients with common digestive system tumors in China,including esophageal cancer.More than 50%cancer patients had inadequate intakes of cereal,fruit,vegetable,dairy,soybean,fish and shrimp and diet variety.The mean high bound score was 2.75,with 94.23%of them having good or acceptable dietary intake.The mean low bound score was 33.88,and 55.77%of patients have moderate to severe of insufficient intake.The diet quality distance was 36.63,and 42.31%of patients have moderate to severe dietary imbalance.Three dietary patterns,namely A,B and C,were identified,with pattern B being the most dominant.Patterns D,E,F,G,H and I were not observed.Conclusion The dietary of the cancer patients surveyed indicates the existence of dietary imbalances,mainly manifesting as inadequate intake.It is recommended to strengthen nutritional health guidance and targeted nutritional intervention measures.
