Mechanical ultrasound characteristics of carotid artery and its risk factors in elderly patients with T2DM complicated with sarcopenia

Abstract：Objective To investigate the mechanical ultrasound characteristics of carotid artery and its risk factors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)complicated with sarcopenia.Methods Totally 100 elderly pa-tients with T2DM complicated with sarcopenia(observation group)and 100 elderly patients with T2DM alone(control group)were selected,and carotid artery mechanical ultrasonography was performed on the next day after admission.Carot-id intima-media thickness(IMT),peak systolic velocity(PSV),end-diastolic velocity(EDV),resistance index(RI)and carotid plaque score were compared between the two groups.Clinical medical records of the two groups were collected,uni-variate and multivariate Logistic regression models were used to analyze the risk factors of elderly patients with T2DM com-plicated with sarcopenia,and receiver operating characteristics(ROC)curve was used to analyze its diagnostic value in el-derly patients with T2DM complicated with sarcopenia.Results IMT,carotid plaque score,PSV and RI in the observa-tion group were higher than those in the control group(all P<0.05),and there was no significant difference in EDV be-tween the two groups(P>0.05).BMI,basal metabolic rate,bone mineral content and physical activity intensity in the past week in the observation group were lower than those in the control group(all P<0.05).The levels of TC,TG,LDL-C,HDL-C,and the percentage of diabetes complications in observation group were higher than those in the control group(all P<0.05).Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that high IMT,PSV,TC,TG,diabetes complications and low physical activity intensity in the past week were independent risk factors for sarcopenia in elderly T2DM patients,and large BMI and high bone mineral content were independent protective factors for sarcopenia in elderly T2DM patients(all P<0.05).Conclusions The IMT,carotid plaque score,PSV and RI in elderly patients with T2DM complicated with sar-copenia are all high.High IMT,PSV,TC,TG,diabetes complications and low physical activity intensity in the past week are independent risk factors for sarcopenia in elderly patients with T2DM.High BMI and high bone mineral content are in-dependent protective factors for sarcopenia in elderly patients with T2DM.
